30" range hood over 36" cooktop

We recently got a new range hood installed over our 36" cooktop and due to an error while placing the order, we ended having a 30" hood. Did not realize this until it was installed. We now have 2 options- either to spend extra money to buy a new 36" hood, remove the existing and get it installed involving a lot of money or live with this 30" hood. My husband thinks this looks fine but the 3" gap on both sides is bothering me. My husband suggested to add under cabinet light in the gap and illuminate the area as the light from hood itself is never enough. I like his cost effective idea but not sure if that's the way to go.
