Big Crack In Wall of GE Refrigerator

We have a side-by-side GE refrigerator that is out of warranty. Had noticed a small line on the wall of the freezer section, but thought it was just a mark. Tried to clean it off with no luck. Now I find that it has turned into a really long wider crack. See photos below. Neither one of us have seen anything like this happen before. Can we continue to use it like this or will the cold/moisture seep into the insulation and cause a mold problem or other problems over time? And what causes something like this to happen?
