How war hero's defamation case has rocked Australia Empty How war hero's defamation case has rocked Australia

Tue May 30, 2023 10:58 pm
For months on end, Australia's most-decorated living soldier sat stoically in a Sydney courtroom as dozens of witnesses accused him of war crimes, bullying peers, and assaulting his mistress.

But Ben Roberts-Smith was not the one on trial.

The 44-year-old had brought the case, suing three Australian newspapers over a series of articles in 2018 which he says defamed him. He argues they ruined his life by painting him as a callous man who had broken the moral and legal rules of war, disgracing his country in the process.

But the media outlets say they reported the truth, and have set out to prove it.

It is the first time in history any court has been tasked with assessing allegations of war crimes by Australian forces.

Warning: This article contains descriptions of violence which readers may find upsetting.

Lasting 110 days and costing up to an estimated A$25m ($16.3m, £13.2m), the trial has heard extraordinary and at times bizarre evidence about every facet of Mr Roberts-Smith's life.

It sparked a media frenzy, captured national attention, and has made Mr Roberts-Smith the public face of accusations of Australian war crimes in Afghanistan.

After sifting through volumes of evidence, this week a judge is due to hand down a decision in the historic case.

Thu Jun 01, 2023 12:28 am
Australian mining giant BHP says it underpaid current and former workers across the country for 13 years.

Around 28,500 employees received less holiday than they were entitled to, a review conducted by the firm found.

Meanwhile, 400 workers did not get additional allowances "due to an error with the employment entity."

BHP says it has reported the incident to the authorities and the errors will cost the company up to $280m (£225m) before taxes.

How war hero's defamation case has rocked Australia Empty Nearly 100 bodies unidentified after India train crash

Tue Jun 06, 2023 3:35 am
Five days after a deadly three-train crash killed 275 people in India, close to a 100 bodies remain unclaimed.

The crash on Friday evening in the state of Odisha involved two passenger trains and a stationary goods train.

More than 1,000 injured were taken to hospitals for treatment. Many families say they are still looking for loved ones.

The deadly collision is India's worst rail accident this century.

The crash saw a passenger train derail after wrongly entering into a loop track by the side of the main line and colliding with a stationary goods train that was parked there. Its derailed carriages then struck the rear coaches of a second passenger train going in the opposite direction.

More than 3,000 passengers are thought to have been travelling on the two trains, with reports saying both were packed.

Desperate family members of passengers from Odisha and other states have been crowding hospitals, seeking information about their loved ones. But in some cases, identifying the body is proving to be a real challenge.

At the Balasore District Hospital in Odisha, Muhammad Nizamuddin couldn't claim his grandsons' bodies.

Tafsir Ansari, 16 and his brother, Tausif, 13, were traveling by the Coromandel Express with their father when it met with an accident.
