’90s retro became a big theme in the web design trends of last year—an expression of the collective longing for the innocence of the early internet. In 2023, that trend shows no signs of abating. Designers are now ramping up their creative interpretation of nostalgia, with a particular emphasis on navigation.
Explaining his record-store-themed navigation design, 99designs by Vista designer, Marijn B, says, “Because the visitors understand how the objects work in the real world, they’ll understand more quickly how to interact with them on the website. Browsing it feels just as easy as flicking through records or reading the back of a record, while seeing vinyls all around you and being mesmerized by commercial banner marquees. It gives the user this familiar, warm feeling.
